The Internet and its protocols are rapidly conquering the world. With the Internet now the de facto platform for delivering interactive services to the home, there is definitely progress in evolving the PC into a Web-ready device, as well as the prospects for developing consumer-friendly, low-cost terminals built around access to the Web, electronic mail, and a host of entertainment-and information-based services.

IPOS, the Internet Protocol Out Stations, developed by Ferranti Computer Systems is providing a base line Internet aware platform for embedded platform for data acquisition and control applications. IPOS is a low cost Internet, Embedded, Appliance tailored for unattended operation. IPOS is available for AMR (5 min, 30 min, 60 min, 24 h) but also for Control functions at the same site.
