What do we mean with ‘Frictionless IT’- and why do we need it?

Basically, frictionless IT means IT that is user friendly on every single level. It talks about IT that follows the (constantly changing) needs of the user. Frictionless IT is simple IT that doesn’t require a lot of thinking. Frictionless IT is smooth. And most of all? Frictionless IT is everything we need.

But there seems to be a difference between personal and business IT…

Because it’s becoming more and more obvious that there is an alarming disconnection between business and personal IT. While business IT does remain reliable on all counts, it also remains quite slow in use, it is complex to understand and more than once… it’s just plain frustrating. Personal IT, on the other hand, is available for everyone, easy to understand and supersonic fast in use. In other words: frictionless.

And exactly because personal IT is so user friendly, so much the more it is annoying to work with the much slower business IT. Especially the younger generation, that grew up with first personal IT and later business IT (in contrast to the older generation, that first encountered business IT), finds it difficult to jockey between the two.

So, now that we’re recognizing this challenge, it’s only logical that we should find a solution to make this difference disappear. We need to simplify business software so that we can easily navigate this as well.

But how do we provide enterprises with the same frictionless IT?

Of course, there isn’t an easy to follow manual for making this happen – otherwise, this problem would’ve never occurred in the first place. But we can start by trying to improve following issues – and work our way onward from there.


1.   Usability

First of all, we need to think about a better usability, which is indispensable when navigating the software. This means a better and more smooth interaction between user and system. Because this is where the first problem occurs: the user interface, which is so important for taking up that important user-centric approach, is often overlooked – which often makes working with this software utterly frustrating.


2.   Speed

The next thing we have to improve, is the speed of the software. Because your interface can be the prettiest there is – but that doesn’t matter a bit if it’s not working fast enough. And that makes sense, doesn’t it? Business IT is made to be used in a professional setting, so it’s only logical for it to work as fast as possible. When you’re using a software that’s taking a lot of time to get somewhere, you’ll not only get less work done – but you’ll also end up with a lot of frustrated employees. Both things that aren’t the greatest thing around. So, next up… improving that speed.


3.   Integration

The third issue that needs to be resolved, is a seamless integration between product and software. In other words: the software needs to match up with the existing IT environment of the company. Because when this isn’t the case, you’ll encounter a breach in the productivity rate of every user: the constant switch will slow them down when changing from one platform to another. Integration is key for a productive professional environment!
