Province goes for dynamic travel information at public transport stops

The Hague – Over the next 12 months, no fewer than 1200 bus stops in the  will be equipped with information boards displaying dynamic travel information for passengers. The displays will provide passengers with updated departure times at the stops. They will also notify passengers of changes to bus routes or crisis situations, etc. Two suppliers have been selected on the basis of a Europe-wide tender.  The supply and management of the information displays will be provided by Antwerp-based Ferranti Computer Systems. The management of the actual travel information has been assigned to the Travel Information Group in .

In addition to displays at public transport transfer points, bus and tram stops will themselves also be equipped with soon to be developed displays. The new displays will make it possible to communicate current travel information on a large scale, so that even quieter stops in rural areas will be able to display up-to-date information. Representative States have stated in their coalition accord that by 2010, 50% of public transport stops will be equipped with dynamic travel information. That is good for around 1700 stops. The province has set aside €6 million for dynamic travel information at bus and tram stops over a period of four years. The Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management has also pledged a considerable sum towards the project.

Solar cells
Discussions are currently underway with suppliers regarding the possibility of a pilot project for powering bus and tram stop displays using solar cells. The project aims to establish whether solar cells can generate enough energy for the displays to function independently.
