In the ever-evolving landscape of utility management, Ferranti is committed to leading the charge as pioneers of innovation. At the heart of this lies our MECOMS 365 solution, a software platform designed to streamline and optimize the core activities of utility companies. From billing to market communication, customer interaction to quoting, MECOMS 365 embodies efficiency, all powered by cutting-edge Microsoft technology as underlying platform

But even the most advanced systems encounter challenges, prompting us to seek solutions. Introducing MECOMS GPT, built for internal usage!! Driven by a collaboration between Ferranti and student interns, this AI-chatbot aims to simplify the implementation process for consultants, providing them with instant access to knowledge.

What functions does MECOMS GPT serve?

MECOMS GPT isn’t just a chatbot; it’s a testament to the potential of students. The goal is that consultants can engage with the chatbot, tapping into its extensive technical knowledge. They can upload multiple queries simultaneously, gaining rapid insights across various domains. Historical conversations are preserved, fostering continuity and learning.

Despite its independence, MECOMS GPT seamlessly integrates with Ferranti’s infrastructure, ensuring accessibility without compromising security.

The Development Journey

With the combined efforts of our KDG interns Jon, Cisse, and Kevin, alongside the expertise of Ferranti specialists Jonas Thys and Thomas Gransard, this project came to live. Together, they had a lot of brainstorming and strategizing, breathing life into the MECOMS GPT project. Leveraging Azure Open AI, Azure Kubernetes, Javascript, and .NET amongst others, they crafted a solution.

The Process:

  1. Brainstorming on which technology they wanted to deploy
  1. Selecting the data for their initial version
  1. Designing a sophisticated prompt engineering strategy
  1. Developing a sleek front end
  1. Testing with Ferranti consultants to assess its usefulness

Overcoming Challenges

For Jon, Cisse and Kevin, the journey was as much about learning as it was about innovation. Working with Language Model applications presented unique challenges, requiring creative prompt engineering and adaptability. However, through dedication and daily collaboration, they navigated these obstacles, emerging with valuable insights.

What brings the future?

In January Jon, Cisse and Kevin presented their outcome and excelled in their internship. Whit a year of hard work they left a blueprint for other students and our Ferranti specialist to further optimize and test MECOMS GPT.

Looking ahead, the focus is on achieving a significant milestone: launching the first official version of MECOMS GPT. This requires completing a final testing phase to ensure a polished product ready for success.

A Journey of Innovation

As we reflect on the journey of MECOMS GPT, one thing is clear: the future belongs to those who dare to innovate. With students at the forefront of this revolution, there’s no limit to what we can achieve. As Ferranti continues to pave the way forward, students will remain an integral part of the journey, driving innovation, and shaping the future of utility management for generations to come.
