Iceland’s energy sector is known for its strong focus on sustainability, innovation, and reliability. Against this backdrop, Ferranti and Advania continue to strengthen their long-standing partnership with the launch of a new MECOMS 365 implementation at Orkusalan, a leading Icelandic energy producer and supplier. This project marks an important milestone: the first MECOMS 365 implementation in Iceland, built on trust, proven collaboration, and a shared long-term vision.
Founded in 2006, Orkusalan is an Icelandic energy producer and supplier serving around 40,000 customers with 100% renewable energy generated by six of its own hydropower plants, including the Lagarfossvirkjun hydropower plant.
Orkusalan has been a MECOMS customer since 2020, using MECOMS R4 to support its meter-to-cash processes. Over the years, a strong and trusted relationship has developed between Orkusalan, Ferranti, and Advania. This mutual trust, combined with Orkusalan’s goal to keep a competitive advantage and their IT-platforms current, laid the foundation for taking the next step together towards MECOMS 365.

In November 2023, Ferranti and Advania initiated an in-depth analysis with Orkusalan to assess the transition to Dynamics 365 and MECOMS 365. The result was a project dubbed ‘Spark’, which officially kicked off in November 2025 following the signing of the subcontract in October 2025. The project is planned to run for 18 months, with a targeted go-live in the first half of 2027. The project team brings consultants from Ferranti and Advania together with Orkusalan’s business team and will stay closely involved throughout the journey.
During the analysis phase, it became clear that moving to MECOMS 365 would allow Orkusalan to simplify and standardize its processes. Over time, the existing MECOMS R4 environment had accumulated customizations, some inherited from earlier implementations. The transition to MECOMS 365 provides an opportunity to minimize customizations and align more closely with standard, best-practice processes.
In addition, MECOMS 365 offers a future-proof platform that supports Orkusalan’s growth ambitions. Built on Microsoft Dynamics 365, the solution delivers improved scalability, performance, maintainability, and user experience, all supported by Microsoft’s one-version strategy. The move also reduces potential risks associated with Dynamics AX reaching end of life.
Finally, MECOMS 365 enables stronger automations and integration capabilities with other systems. For Orkusalan, this includes tighter integration with Dynamics 365 Customer Service, which is already in use, as well as the use of Flowlogic to streamline processes and data flows across the application landscape.
The success of this project is rooted in the complementary strengths of Ferranti and Advania.
Ferranti brings the MECOMS 365 software, deep product expertise, and hands-on implementation experience. During the project, Ferranti will provide the solution architect and application consultants, while maintaining direct access to the MECOMS product organization to ensure alignment with the product roadmap and best practices.
Advania acts as the local partner with deep roots in the Icelandic market. Advania contributes strong Dynamics 365 expertise, local knowledge, and critical ISV solutions tailored to Icelandic requirements, such as the Advania Banking Solution for payments and collections and the Advania Message Center for document output management. Advania also continuously invests in building MECOMS 365 expertise through certifications, training, and joint marketing initiatives, while offering the advantage of speaking the local language and understanding local regulations.
“We see significant opportunities in our cooperation with Ferranti, which brings deep expertise in information systems for energy companies. The Icelandic energy market is at a turning point, as many companies need to renew their core systems and strengthen their digital foundations. Through this partnership, we can combine the expertise of Ferranti and Advania to support Icelandic energy companies on this journey,” says Sigríður Sía Þórðardóttir, Executive Director of Business Solutions at Advania.

Together, Ferranti and Advania form a unique proposition for energy suppliers and distribution grid operators in Iceland, combining global product expertise with local market knowledge and localization.

“This project is not just about a technology upgrade, but about building a scalable foundation that Orkusalan can rely on for years to come.”- Paul Hermans,Solution Manager at Ferranti
As the Spark project has only recently started, the focus today is on building a solid foundation for long-term success. While concrete benefits will materialize closer to go-live, the project already represents a significant step forward: the first MECOMS 365 implementation in Iceland and a showcase of what is possible through strong partnerships.
Looking ahead, Ferranti and Advania see this project as a cornerstone for their long-term collaboration in the Icelandic energy market. By successfully delivering MECOMS 365 at Orkusalan, they aim to demonstrate the value of a standardized, scalable, and future-proof solution and encourage other energy suppliers to take the step towards MECOMS 365 as well.
“After having conducted thorough analysis of our current system and processes, I’m confident that Ferranti together with Advania will facilitate Orkusalan’s migration to a future-proof, modern platform which supports more automation with better performance and adds flexibility for us to maintain a competitive edge.” – Erling Ormar Vignisson, CIO at Orkusalan

Join us together with Advania on May 12th for this exclusive event in Iceland. We’ll dive deeper into real-life cases like Orkusalan and share insights on MECOMS 365 and how we can support Icelandic utilities in modernizing their core platforms and preparing for the next generation of AI‑driven operations
