Another IDC European Utilities Xchange wrapped up, this time in the stunning setting of Venice. But beyond the picturesque canals, the real currents of change flowed through discussions on AI and flexibility as game-changers for the energy sector.

1. AI for energy and Energy for AI

AI is not just about efficiency; it’s about empowering data-driven decision-making at scale. However, AI’s rapid growth depends on energy, creating a dynamic cycle where energy powers AI and AI, in turn, transforms energy. Now that the initial AI hype has settled, we’re finally seeing real, valuable implementations across industries. A key insight is that unlocking AI’s full potential requires more than just applying it to isolated use cases; it must be embedded into end-to-end processes to drive true organizational impact.

2. Flexibility: The Backbone of Net-Zero

Achieving net-zero targets is impossible without flexibility across generation, consumption and grid management. The industry is advancing towards smart MDM (Meter Data Management), improved forecasting and automated flexibility requests to address challenges such as grid congestion. Real-time metering data is also being used to guide consumer patterns towards a more sustainable ecosystem.

3. Metering data hub as strategic enabler of innovation

At Ferranti, we took an active role in shaping these discussions by hosting our own round table on Smart MDM. We explored how advanced MDM capabilities can help utilities overcome industry challenges, including grid congestion, real-time energy balancing and seamless integration with distributed energy resources.

But beyond these technical aspects, we also addressed a crucial question: How can we help customers keep the lights on while ensuring energy remains affordable? We discussed ways to incentivise consumers to get the best value in their electrification journey, making smart energy management both accessible and sustainable.
